Dementia
Friendly Care
The approach we embrace is a model of care grounded in best practices for aged and dementia care, along with developing an expertly prepared environment. This method focuses on supporting the individual and the environment, adapted to aid memory loss and foster independence. The result is that people living with dementia can make meaningful contributions to their community and engage in significant activities. They also have the opportunity to maintain and even restore functions. Our approach is flexible, innovative, and firmly rooted in research.
Respite Care
We offer respite care for both planned breaks, and unforeseen situations where respite is more urgently needed. Knowing that a loved one is properly cared for while at Holmwood allows carers and families to take a break with assurance and confidence.
Respite residents have access to round-the-clock care and are encouraged to participate in activities during their time with us. They’ll enjoy freshly cooked meals and live alongside our permanent residents.
Respite residents are charged the basic daily care fee for each day for the length of the stay. The Australian Government determines the basic daily care fee, which is reviewed twice yearly.

What is the Holmwood approach to Dementia Care?
This method emphasises supporting the individual and the surroundings, tailored to aid memory loss and foster independence. The result is that people living with dementia can make meaningful contributions to their community, engage in significant activities, and have the opportunity to maintain and even restore function. This approach is flexible, innovative, and firmly rooted in research.
Dementia care in action
Our approach centres around helping people living with dementia undertake meaningful tasks and maintain independence and dignity. This is put into action across four broad areas.
- Cognitive – encouraging residents to keep their memory fit through simple maths, handling money, trivia, and tactile sorting activities.
- Practical Life – involving residents in practical activities around the residence – assisting in food preparation, sorting cutlery, folding towels, or contributing to other physical duties.
- Social, cultural and spiritual – connecting residents with stimulation such as reading, enjoying music with songbooks or sheets, reciting prayers or exercising such as dancing or gardening.
- Sensory – introducing a combination of physical and sensory stimulation through practical tasks such as preparing fragrant foods or spices and scented hand massages, among others.
The prepared environment
In dementia care, a well-prepared environment is essential to make residents feel safe and confident and stay engaged. In practical terms, this means providing visual cues throughout the home – name cards at the dinner table, high-contrast table settings, and visually descriptive cards to support everyday tasks such as using the bathroom. We take care to create a safe and engaging space for residents to interact and live in, focusing on their individual needs and comfort.
Trained and supportive caregivers
It goes without saying that our approach to dementia care requires appropriately trained caregivers. Our team combines their extensive care experience with specialised training to provide the highest quality of care, focusing on the unique needs and wellbeing of each individual.
